Jacob Bonsack-Fabarius

On 9-1-1639 in Georgenthal the organist and teacher to Gräfenroda Jacob Bonsack married the daughter of the cooper and citizen Thomas König, Magdalene König of Gotha.

Jacob is the oldest son of the Kastenmeister Hans Bonsack from Cabarz who died already two years before the marriage ceremony of his son.

For the genealogy of our namesakes this family celebration is so important, because Jacob Bonsack latinized his last name, as it was usual in certain circles at that time.

On the basis of bean=faba the surname Bonsack changed to Fabarius [in the true sense: bean man]. This is not consequently, for the name has to become saccus fabanum.

After the death of the father of the family in 1660 the widow with her eight children moved to Jena and all members of the family from this time only called themselves Fabarius instead of Bonsack.
